"(They Long to Be) Close to You" is The Carpenters' second official single, from their second album Close to You. Released on June 20, 1970, "(They Long to Be) Close to You" became The Carpenters' first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, where it would stay at #1 for four weeks.

[edit] History

"(They Long to Be) Close to You" was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and was originally recorded by Dionne Warwick. Warwick's B-side became a success, and the A-side, "(They Long to Be) Close to You", became forgotten. In 1970, Herb Alpert requested that Richard create his arrangement of the song. The Carpenters subsequently recorded it, and it would become their biggest hit, peaking at #1 and staying there for four weeks.
